Established in 1973, HELLA New Zealand has long been committed to the design and manufacturing of the highest quality lighting products. The company has witnessed a significant expansion over the past five decades, owed to the adoption of modern production methods and substantial investments in pioneering cutting-edge technologies. Our products illuminate seafaring vessels the world over with energy-efficient, durable, and aesthetically pleasing lighting solutions that both enhance safety and optimize the marine experience.

Spanning 7,500 square metres, the manufacturing premises are a testament to modern engineering with highly precise automated production capabilities and dedicated in-house design teams. Plastic injection moulding machines have been a major addition, enabling us to mould components to an exceptionally accurate margin of just ±0.02mm.

Our electronics plant is equipped with the most recent automated, precision Surface Mount Technology (SMT) assembly systems. In 2013, the facility achieved self-sufficiency in Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs) production. To illustrate its productivity, the plant places 53,000 LEDs onto PCBAs daily, which amounts to 12.8 million LEDs per annum (as of 2022).

In light of New Zealand’s rich maritime history and world-class yacht manufacturing prowess, HELLA New Zealand was designated as the global headquarters for Hella marine in 2004.

The NaviLED Navigation lamp series elevated our status as pioneers in marine lighting. One of our greatest accomplishments includes being the first company globally to secure the European ‘BSH’ compliance for a navigation light using LEDs, in the form of the NaviLED PRO series.

The NaviLED series significantly transformed the Marine industry by offering energy-efficient LED lighting that is incomparably reliable and durable. Our History

1899

Hella KG first established as a public company, in Lippstadt, Germany.

1925

Hella KG begins to manufacture Marine related product.

1973

Hella opens a manufacturing plant in New Zealand.

1993

Production of Marine Equipment moves from Germany to Austria.

1998

Marine interior product (LED) first manufactured in Finland, initially for DC applications, and thereafter for AC product to the Cruise ship industry.

2002

Hella marine creates the first NaviLED navigation lamps.

2004

Hella marine is relocated to New Zealand due to its rich maritime history, and a winning streak of 3 Americas cups. This coincides with Hella New Zealand designing and manufacturing the first LED BSH approved lamp.

2008

Hella New Zealand creates the first, and now iconic ‘NaviLED Compact’ navigation light.

2010

Hella New Zealand expands its plant and increases the size of its workforce.

2013

Hella New Zealand creates the first thermally conductive but electrically insulating injection moulded plastic lamp – known as the ‘Sea Hawk’ lamp.

2015

Hella New Zealand expands the operation further, with the purchase of a dedicated the surface mount electronics Company in Waihi which currently makes all of Hella New Zealand’s electronic circuit boards.
